Hands-On HVAC Installation Bootcamp

This 5-day class is designed to teach the fundamentals of heat pump technology and installation, integrated with backup gas furnace systems for dual-fuel applications. During the class, we will cover a complete installation process to help your technicians become familiar with the steps needed for a successful, on-time installation. Students will get hands-on experience installing a heat pump and gas furnace system in our installation lab.

Topics Included

• Safe Removal of Existing Equipment: Proper pump-down, recovery, and safe extraction of the existing equipment.
• Pre-installation planning: Evaluate job sites, determine optimal unit placement, and prepare materials and tools for successful installation.
• Mechanical Installation: Step-by-step training on installing indoor and outdoor units, brazing line sets, installing condensate drains, and verifying airflow setup.
• Heat Pump Installation Techniques: Installation steps, best practices, and troubleshooting common errors. Understand reversing valves, defrost cycles and balance point setup for optimal seasonal performance.
• Electrical & Controls: Learn safe wiring methods for high- and low-voltage circuits, thermostat setup, and communication control connections.
• Refrigerant Piping & Charging: Installation of refrigerant lines and how to properly evacuate, pressure test, and charge systems using correct refrigerant handling and EPA-compliant techniques.
• Gas Lines & Venting: Routing, sizing, leak-checking, and proper venting for the backup gas furnace.
• Condensate Management: Managing moisture for both indoor cooling coils and outdoor unit winter defrost cycles.
• Ductwork and Air Flow: installing supply and return plenums and ductwork reviewing proper ductwork sizing. Review setup procedures for establishing proper system airflow
• Heat Pump Duel Fuel Applications: Understanding performance characteristics in low temperatures and successfully integrating the heat pump with the backup gas heating system.
• Commissioning & Quality Installation Verification: Executing system startup procedures, completing performance testing, and using verification checklists to ensure quality.

Equipment:

Students will work with fully operational, brand-neutral heat pump and backup gas furnace systems in a professional training environment.

Target Audience: This 40-hour class is designed for individuals who have no or very limited field installation experience.

Our Instructor:

Joe Misner has worked in the HVAC industry since 2002. Throughout his career, he has advanced from HVAC Lead Installer and Service Technician to HVAC Operations Manager and HVAC Installation Manager. With extensive hands-on experience, Joseph has developed broad expertise in installing a wide variety of HVAC systems, mentoring and training technicians, and maintaining strict quality control standards.
