For many students, the path after high school isn’t always straightforward. Traditional colleges work well for some, but others discover they thrive in hands-on careers where they can build real skills and enter the workforce faster. That was exactly the experience of Joey Weinman, a student who chose to pivot from a traditional college path to an intensive HVAC training program.
Today, Joey is halfway through his journey at PPATEC, and his experience highlights why many students are choosing trade schools and certification-based programs to launch rewarding careers in the HVAC industry.
A Nontraditional Path to a Skilled Career
Joey Weinman grew up moving frequently due to his father’s military career. Throughout his childhood, he changed schools every couple of years before eventually settling in Towanda, Pennsylvania, where he graduated high school in 2024.
Like many recent graduates, Joey initially chose the traditional college route. He enrolled at Penn State Altoona to study exercise science and completed two semesters before circumstances changed.
“I wanted to switch schools because Penn State got their branch campuses defunded,” Joey explained.
He transferred to Bloomsburg for another semester, but during that time he realized something important.
Traditional college simply wasn’t the right fit.
Instead of continuing down a path that didn’t excite him, Joey started exploring alternative careers, specifically the skilled trades.
That search led him to PPATEC.
Discovering a Fast, Focused HVAC Program
One of the biggest factors that drew Joey to PPATEC was the school’s condensed 11-week HVAC & Energy Professional Program. Unlike traditional multi-year programs, PPATEC focuses on practical training that prepares students to enter the workforce quickly.
“I picked them because they had a condensed program that was only 11 weeks long,” Joey said. “But it still gave me lots of hands-on and book work experience and the skills and certifications I need.”
For students who want to transition into a career quickly, this type of accelerated HVAC school can be a game-changer. Rather than spending years in classrooms, students gain direct exposure to the tools, systems, and real-world scenarios they’ll encounter in the field.
The result is a training experience designed to move students from beginners to job-ready technicians in just a few months.
Why HVAC Is a Career Worth Pursuing
For Joey, the HVAC industry stood out because it blends multiple skill sets into one career.
“I picked HVAC because it’s a career that has a lot of different trades included in it with the plumbing and electrical side,” he explained. “And I think there’s a lot of room for advancement and opportunity.”
That versatility is one reason HVAC careers are growing in popularity. Technicians regularly work with:
- Electrical systems
- Refrigeration technology
- Air conditioning systems
- Heating equipment
- Ventilation and airflow systems
Because HVAC touches multiple disciplines, technicians develop a broad set of technical skills that can lead to numerous career paths, including service technician, installation specialist, system designer, and even business owner.
And with the increasing demand for climate control systems, trained technicians are needed across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.
The Importance of Hands-On HVAC Certification Training
One thing Joey noticed immediately about PPATEC’s program was the strong emphasis on hands-on training.
“I’m five weeks into the program right now,” he said. “It’s been a lot of fun. A lot of hands-on, some book work.”
This balance is critical for students pursuing an HVAC certification, because understanding the theory behind heating and cooling systems is only part of the equation. Technicians must also know how to diagnose problems, work with tools, and handle equipment safely.
The HVAC & Energy Professional Program is structured so students gradually build their skills week by week.
By building knowledge step-by-step, students gain the confidence they need to work in the field.
Earning Industry Certifications
One of the biggest milestones in Joey’s training came during week five of the program.
“I just got EPA certified and A2L certified this week,” he said.
These certifications are essential credentials for HVAC professionals.
EPA Certification
EPA certification is required for technicians who work with refrigerants. Without it, technicians cannot legally handle many HVAC systems that use regulated refrigerants.
By earning this certification during training, students graduate ready to work with real equipment immediately.
A2L Certification
The HVAC industry is evolving as new refrigerants are introduced that are more environmentally friendly. These newer refrigerants fall into a category known as A2L refrigerants.
Obtaining A2L certification ensures technicians understand:
- Safe handling procedures
- System compatibility
- Updated industry standards
Programs like PPATEC’s HVAC training ensure students stay ahead of these industry changes.
A Supportive Learning Environment
Another factor that helped Joey choose PPATEC was the atmosphere he experienced when he first visited the campus.
“I came and visited and the atmosphere was great. Everyone I met was amazing,” he said.
Trade schools thrive when students feel supported by instructors and classmates. In hands-on technical training environments, collaboration is key. Students often work together to troubleshoot systems and practice installations.
According to Joey, the friendships and community inside the program have been one of the highlights.
“The atmosphere and the friends you make in the program are awesome.”
Support for Veterans and GI Bill Benefits
For Joey, another important factor was that PPATEC accepts GI Bill benefits.
Because he lives about three hours away from the training center, the ability to use his GI Bill to help cover tuition and housing made attending the program much more accessible.
“They also took my GI Bill that I was using to pay for college,” Joey explained. “So, I was able to pay for it through that and also pay for housing.”
Programs that support military families and veterans create additional pathways for students to pursue technical careers without accumulating large amounts of debt.
Connecting Students with Real HVAC Employers
One of the biggest concerns students have when choosing a program is what happens after graduation.
PPATEC addresses this by actively helping students connect with employers in the HVAC industry.
“PPATEC gives you a lot of opportunities to connect with companies,” Joey said.
The school hosts a job fair where member companies come to meet students, conduct interviews, and recruit future technicians.
Even if a company doesn’t attend the event, the school still helps facilitate introductions.
“If you want to reach out to companies that do not show up, you can provide them with a list, and they will connect you with them to get a chance to get an interview.”
This type of industry networking is incredibly valuable for new technicians entering the workforce.
Looking Ahead: Starting an HVAC Career
With multiple certifications already completed and hands-on training underway, Joey is already seeing his hard work pay off.
Before even finishing the program, he accepted a job offer with Auchinachie Services, an exciting step that reflects the real-world value of completing a focused HVAC training program.
“After graduation, I’m looking for immediate employment,” Joey says.
Now, with a position already secured, he’s ready to transition directly from the classroom into the field.
“I’m excited to get going and put the skills and knowledge I’ve learned here to use.”
Is PPATEC Right for You?
Choosing a career path is ultimately about finding the right fit, one that aligns with how you learn, what you enjoy, and where you want to go professionally. For students who are ready to move beyond the traditional classroom and step into a more active, skill-based environment, PPATEC offers a clear and practical path forward.
Joey’s experience highlights what’s possible when you commit to a focused HVAC training program: gaining in-demand skills, earning essential HVAC certification, and stepping confidently into the workforce.
If your goal is to build a career where your work is hands-on, your skills are always in demand, and your growth is based on what you can do, not just what you study, then PPATEC may be the right next step.
