From Service to Skilled Trade: How Joshua Pierce Found His Path in HVAC

Transitioning from military service to civilian life can be a pivotal moment filled with both uncertainty and opportunity. For Joshua Pierce, that transition became the starting point of a new, purpose-driven career in the skilled trades.

After retiring from the Army in July, Joshua initially stepped into roofing sales. But it didn’t take long for him to realize something was missing.

“I went to work for a company doing roofing sales,” he recalls. “It was kind of a dead end.”

Like many veterans navigating their next chapter, Joshua began exploring other options. A conversation with a friend led him to consider the trades and ultimately, HVAC.

Choosing a Career with Versatility and Stability

For Joshua, HVAC stood out for its breadth and long-term potential.

“HVAC gives you the fundamentals of electric, plumbing, and heating and cooling,” he explains. “So, you can branch out into any one of those fields.”

Beyond versatility, he also saw the trade as future-proof.

“It’s not something that’s going to be taken over by AI anytime soon,” he says. “That’s where I set my heart.”

In a rapidly changing workforce, that kind of stability and hands-on work was exactly what he was looking for.

Why PPATEC Was the Right Fit

With several training options available near the Harrisburg area, Joshua carefully compared programs before making his decision. PPATEC quickly rose to the top.

“With PPATEC, you have access to over 500 different companies that you can network with,” he says. “We get familiarized with a lot of these people who come in.”

Equally important was the program’s efficiency.

“I’m not going to spend two years in school when I can get it done in 10–11 weeks and go right into the industry feeling comfortable,” he explains.

For Joshua, it wasn’t just about learning, it was about launching a career quickly and confidently.

Making the Most of GI Bill Benefits

Joshua’s journey was also supported by his GI Bill benefits, which played a critical role in making training accessible and stress-free.

“With the GI Bill, I’m able to get paid every month to go to school,” he says. “It cushions my bank account, so I don’t have to work weekends or nights.”

Even more impactful, the benefits covered everything.

“It covered 100% of my tuition, tools, books, everything that came with it,” he adds. “It’s pretty nice being able to use that.”

A Hands-On Learning Experience That Stands Apart

From his first day in the 400-Hour HVAC & Energy Professional Program, Joshua noticed a difference.

“The setups we have here are not like any other school,” he says. “There’s a huge variety of equipment, and we get hands-on experience with all of it.”

But it wasn’t just the equipment that stood out, it was the people.

“All the instructors have many years of experience, and you can talk to them after class if you don’t understand something,” he explains. “They give you their phone numbers and emails. It’s not just ‘learn this and you’re done.’”

Instead, Joshua found something more lasting.

“It’s a lifelong team that you’re building with this school, something you can rely on even after you’re out in the industry.”

A Natural Fit for Veterans

Joshua believes programs like PPATEC are especially well-suited for veterans.

“In the military, I was a hands-on guy,” he says. “I don’t see myself sitting behind a desk ever.”

HVAC offered a way to continue working with his hands while building a meaningful career.

“This gives me the opportunity to stay in the field, stay active, and do real work,” he explains.

He also points to the advantage of entering the workforce quickly.

“Instead of spending four years in college and maybe starting to make money after that, you come out of this program with certifications and you’re already employable,” he says.

From Classroom to Career

Joshua’s success story is already underway.

“PPATEC was able to place me with a career right away,” he says. “I was the first one hired out of my group.”

In fact, his transition from student to professional is happening almost immediately.

“I start work three days after graduation,” he adds. “The only reason it’s not sooner is because I can’t start on a Saturday.”

Building a Future with Confidence

Joshua’s journey reflects what’s possible when the right training meets determination and support. From military service to skilled trade professional, he’s found a path that offers stability, growth, and purpose.

For veterans and anyone seeking a faster, hands-on route to a rewarding career his story is a powerful reminder:
