Submersible Well Pump Diagnostic Training

Course Overview

This one-day hands-on course is designed to provide technicians, contractors, and maintenance professionals with the practical knowledge and diagnostic skills necessary to identify and troubleshoot issues in residential well pump systems. Through a combination of classroom instruction and live demonstrations, participants will learn how to safely and efficiently diagnose electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic problems that affect well performance. By the end of the class, attendees will have a solid understanding of common well pump system configurations, diagnostic procedures, and corrective actions to ensure reliable water delivery and system longevity.

Key Learning Objectives

• System Components & Operation:
  • Understand the design and function of typical residential well systems, including submersible well pumps and tank components.
  • Electrical Diagnostics: Learn proper testing techniques for motors, pressure switches, relays, capacitors, and control boxes using multimeters and amp probes.
  • Hydraulic Testing & Flow Analysis: Identify water flow and pressure issues, check for suction or discharge restrictions, and assess system efficiency.
• Common Problems & Failures:
  • Recognize signs of electrical faults, dry-run damage, check valve failures, short cycling, and low pressure conditions.
  • Preventative Maintenance & Safety: Review maintenance best practices, system protection devices, and safe troubleshooting methods in wet and confined environments.

Equipment

Participants will work with operational residential well systems and testing instruments in a controlled lab environment.

Our Instructor: Mike Elmer has been in the HVAC and plumbing industry since 2002 and has worked for leading contractors in the South Central PA region. His background includes service HVAC, plumbing, and electric. Mike currently works in the field as a lead troubleshooting service technician.
