Course Overview
This comprehensive, hands-on training program equips technicians with the knowledge
and practical skills to install, commission, and service the Rinnai Heat Pump Companion™
system. Participants will learn how to integrate hydronic technology with existing air-source heat
pumps for improved efficiency, reliability, and comfort.

Learning Objectives

  • • Identify system components and operation principles.
  • • Evaluate compatibility between systems and hydronic kits.
  • • Install hydronic coils, control modules, and plumbing connections.
  • • Configure and program system controls for optimal performance.
  • • Perform startup and commissioning per manufacturer standards.
  • • Diagnose and troubleshoot common operational issues.
  • • Conduct routine maintenance to ensure long-term reliability.
  • • Educate homeowners on proper system operation.
  • • Understanding the advantages of transitioning from electric strips to hydronic heating and the strain it causes on the electrical grid.
  • • Understanding the role of emergency backup or auxiliary heat and the situations in which it activates.

  1. Introduction to Hybrid Heat Systems — Overview of heat pumps, hydronic heating principles, and system components.
  2. System Design and Integration — Sizing, coil selection, and plumbing design for water-to-air applications.
  3. Installation Procedures — Mounting, wiring, and safety protocols for proper setup.
  4. Startup, Testing, and Commissioning — System calibration, testing, and performance verification.
  5. Maintenance and Troubleshooting — Preventive schedules, diagnostics, and service best practices.
  6. Customer Communication and Support — Explaining operation, optimization, and warranty handling.

Our Instructor:

Doug Zerbe has been in the HVAC industry since 2003.  On the contractor side of the industry, he has worked as an installer and service technician before he moved into installation and service management.  Doug also had the opportunity to work in technical support for an HVAC distributor and in sales for an HVAC manufacturer.
