Hands-On HVAC Electrical Components Training

This three-day, hands-on training program is designed to give HVAC technicians a solid, practical understanding of electrical systems and components commonly found in residential HVAC equipment. Participants will learn how to safely work with electricity, read wiring diagrams, test electrical components, and troubleshoot system malfunctions using industry-standard tools and techniques. The course emphasizes real-world diagnostics through lab-based exercises that simulate common electrical failures in furnaces, air conditioners, and heat pumps.

Key Learning Objectives

1. Electrical Fundamentals: Review voltage, current, resistance, and power relationships using Ohm’s Law and circuit principles.
2. Safety Procedures: Understand lockout/tagout procedures, proper tool use, and safe work practices around energized circuits.
3. Component Identification & Operation: Learn the function and testing of common HVAC electrical components, including:
   1. Contactors, relays, and transformers
   2. Capacitors and motors (PSC, ECM, and variable-speed)
   3. Pressure and temperature switches
   4. Thermostats and control boards
   5. Defrost and sequencing controls
4. Wiring & Diagrams: Interpret and create basic wiring diagrams, trace control circuits, and verify power flow in residential HVAC systems.
5. Hands-On Diagnostics: Use multimeters, clamp meters, and other diagnostic tools to measure voltage, amperage, and resistance, and pinpoint system faults.
6. Troubleshooting Techniques: Apply step-by-step diagnostic methods to identify causes of no-heat, no-cool, or intermittent operation issues related to electrical faults.

Equipment

Participants will work on live HVAC training boards and fully operational systems simulating real-world conditions.

Our Instructor:

John Nowicki has been in the HVAC industry since 1985 and has worked for leading contractors in the Southeastern PA region. His background includes residential through light industrial HVAC diagnostics and repairs. John also has experience as a residential service manager and in residential and light commercial installation. His current positions are Lead Technical Trainer, Commercial Field Instructor, Technical Advisor, and Apprenticeship Manager. John often describes himself as passionate about excellence in the HVAC profession and helping others become the best they can be. His fellow techs often refer to him as an air flow nerd.
