Hands-On HVAC Airflow Training

This three-day, hands-on course provides HVAC technicians with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to measure, analyze, and optimize airflow in residential HVAC systems. Proper airflow is the foundation of system efficiency, comfort, and reliability—yet it remains one of the most misunderstood aspects of HVAC service and installation. Through a balanced mix of classroom instruction and extensive lab exercises, participants will learn how to diagnose airflow-related problems, verify duct performance, and make precise adjustments to deliver peak system operation. Students will gain experience using industry-standard instruments to measure static pressure, CFM, temperature rise, and other critical system parameters.

1. Airflow Fundamentals: Understand the principles of air movement and, static pressure
2. System Design Basics: Review duct design concepts, equipment selection, and how improper sizing impacts comfort and efficiency
3. Measuring Airflow: Learn to use manometers and anemometers to accurately measure airflow and static pressure
4. Duct System Evaluation: Identify duct restrictions, leakage, and balancing issues that reduce system performance
5. Fan & Blower Performance: Analyze blower curves, motor speeds, and tap settings to match airflow requirements
6. Diagnostics & Troubleshooting: Perform hands-on testing to identify common issues such as low airflow, uneven temperature distribution, and noise problems
7. Air Balancing & Adjustments: Apply proven methods to balance systems, set proper airflow for heating and cooling modes, and document system performance
8. Safety & Best Practices: Follow proper testing protocols, instrument calibration, and reporting procedures to ensure accuracy and safety

Our Instructor:

John Nowicki has been in the HVAC industry since 1985 and has worked for leading contractors in the Southeastern PA region. His background includes residential through light industrial HVAC diagnostics and repairs. John also has experience as a residential service manager and in residential and light commercial installation. His current positions are Lead Technical Trainer, Commercial Field Instructor, Technical Advisor, and Apprenticeship Manager. John often describes himself as passionate about excellence in the HVAC profession and helping others become the best they can be. His fellow techs often refer to him as an air flow nerd.
