Hands-On Gas Furnace Service & Troubleshooting Training

This three-day hands-on course provides HVAC technicians with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to service, maintain, and troubleshoot gas furnaces safely and effectively. Participants will gain a deep understanding of furnace operation, combustion principles, electrical and gas controls, and common failure modes. Through interactive classroom sessions and extensive lab exercises, students will work on live furnaces to perform real-world diagnostic procedures, identify system faults, and verify proper operation.

Key Learning Objectives

1. Furnace Fundamentals: Understand the sequence of operation, airflow requirements, and the relationship between combustion, ventilation, and safety
2. Components & Controls: Identify and test all major furnace components including:
   1. Ignition systems (hot surface, direct spark, intermittent pilot)
   2. Flame sensors and safety switches – Gas valves, pressure switches, and limit controls
   3. Blower motors, control boards, and thermostats
3. Combustion Analysis: Learn how to use combustion analyzers to measure efficiency, adjust gas pressures, and verify safe operation
4. Electrical & Control Diagnostics: Interpret wiring diagrams, test circuits using multimeters, and troubleshoot electrical issues that impact furnace performance
5. Airflow: Inspect and test airflow, filters, and ducting
6. Common Failures & Troubleshooting: Perform step-by-step diagnostics for common furnace problems such as short cycling, no heat, ignition failure, and poor combustion
7. Maintenance & Best Practices: Conduct routine service procedures, verify operation after repair, and document performance for customer satisfaction.

Equipment:

Participants will work with live gas furnaces in a controlled training environment to simulate real-world scenarios.

Our Instructors:

Mike Elmer has been in the HVAC and plumbing industry since 2002 and has worked for leading contractors in the South Central PA region. His background includes service HVAC, plumbing, and electric. Mike currently works in the field as a lead troubleshooting service technician.

Doug Zerbe has been in the HVAC industry since 2003.  On the contractor side of the industry, he has worked as an installer and service technician before he moved into installation and service management.  Doug also had the opportunity to work in technical support for an HVAC distributor and in sales for an HVAC manufacturer.
