Primarily focuses on safely and efficiently working with the electrical components in basic propane appliances. For the purpose of this course, basic propane appliances are defined as simple appliances that do not have advanced controls and complex electronic ignition systems. They may have simple electronic ignition systems, such as those found in many ranges. They include 120/24 V and DC millivolt systems.

Course objectives include:

  • • Follow safety procedures.
  • • Interpret electrical control circuit diagrams for basic appliances.
  • • Use a digital multimeter.
  • • Measure voltage, resistance and current at any point in an electrical circuit.
  • • Identify functions and operating characteristics of common sensing devices in basic appliances.
  • • Identify functions and operating characteristics of common controls and components in basic propane appliances.
  • • Troubleshoot electrical circuits

Requirements for Certification include the following:

  • Passing score on 4.4 Basic Electricity for Propane Appliance Service exam

Our Instructor: Gary Nouse brings over 40 years of propane industry experience, having worked for multiple marketers and suppliers since 1981. He began in entry-level roles—coating DOT cylinders, working as a service/installer technician, and driving a bobtail—and has since held nearly every position in the field. Aside from leading the propane training program at PPATEC, Gary also serves as a technical liaison for Hiltz Propane Systems and provides consulting services for jurisdictional propane systems through GLN Safety, LLC. This comprehensive background gives him a complete understanding of propane operations and safety. Gary currently serves in a leadership capacity in multiple propane industry trade associations. He uses his extensive hands-on experience to deliver practical, safety-focused training that resonates with students at all levels.
