This robust 5 day class will provide a foundation of theory, practical application, and safety principles for working with the electrical components of HVAC systems. Students will progressively develop their knowledge and skills related to residential and commercial HVAC.

The full-color Basic Electric Theory for HVAC Components course offers classroom and hands on training. This course will cover topics of: Safety & Hazard Awareness, What is Electricity, Ohm’s Law, Circuits & Components, Conductors, Transformers, 24V Controls, Thermostats, Motors, Motor side of compressors, Motor ratings and name plate definitions, Wiring diagrams, Automated control systems for residential, and Troubleshooting.

This intensive program is comprised of hands-on training in our state-of-the-art lab, video simulated operations, and classroom lecture and discussion. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the registrant will have a working knowledge of basic electric theory for HVAC components and be able to apply that in a work environment.

Students who complete this course successfully will progressively be able to:

  • • Demonstrate knowledge of the Basic Electric Theory for HVAC Components, What is Electricity, Ohm’s Law, and other theory
  • • Properly troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, maintain, and service popular brands of A/C units and heat pumps
  • • Perform installation and maintenance on system components including:  Circuit & Components, Conductors,  Transformers, Thermostats, Motors, Other electrical components with minimal supervision
  • • Demonstrate grounding in the fundamentals of HVAC electrical components
  • • Properly perform assigned duties demonstrating proper safety practices and procedures in the lab and the workplace, while installing, designing, troubleshooting, and servicing systems
  • • Maintain a safe and OSHA compliant work environment
  • • Multitask and prioritize all duties and responsibilities in order of importance.

Ed (Eddie) Howell brings over 42 years of industry experience to the PPA technical training program. Eddie began his career working for PA based HVAC company for nearly two decades. He has spent the last 27+ years at APR Supply which included managing their training efforts for the 30+ locations. Ed’s credentials include Nortek TSA, NATE Certified in four disciplines (A/C, HP, Gas Furnace, and Oil & Gas Hydronics), RSES Member, and local OESP Chapter member.
